Membership

The first step to life at Bryn Gweled is beginning membership. It is a process during which you'll get to know us and we'll get to know you. We are neither a utopian community nor a perfectly homogenous group. We are an intentional community of diverse individuals who respect our differences, work together for common benefits, and enjoy good times together.

What is a Bryn Gweled Member?

A Bryn Gweled Homesteads (BG) member is a person who has gone through steps to become an approved applicant, a process that typically takes between six months and a year, and has signed a lease on the land for one of the 79 available lots. The land is owned by all members and is set up as a cooperative. Each two-acre plot is leased to members for 99 years. The rate of turnover of houses in Bryn Gweled is somewhat slower than in the average U.S. community, but times come when people need to move, for a variety of reasons. When a house becomes available, an applicant or couple may purchase it from a departing member and become a leaseholder at the same time.

Buying a house in BG

House purchase is executed at the same time that you sign your 99 year lease for the land. Very few members leave Bryn Gweled, unless they move to a distant area or to a retirement community. When a house becomes available, an approved applicant may purchase it from a present member, and becomes a leaseholder at the same time. of becoming an approved applicant. The process typically takes between six months and a year.

Expectations of Members

Members participate in the community in many ways through committees. In addition, Bryn Gweled has work parties to maintain the roads, community center, and recreation facilities, usually on the first Saturday of the month. Participation in a work party early in the membership process is a good way to meet future neighbors.

What are the benefits of membership?

Perhaps the greatest is knowing and caring for other members. BG has community dinners, usually the first Saturday of the month at the Community Center. Members also enjoy recreation facilities and a common, deer-proof garden.
